TE NGĀKAU RECORDING STUDIOS DIRECTOR

New Zealand Symphony Orchestra

TE NGĀKAU RECORDING STUDIOS DIRECTOR

(a tempo pieno)
  • Outstanding opportunity to lead a new commercial recording studio connected to Aotearoa New Zealand’s national orchestra
  • Greenfields role—build the business, client pipeline and operational foundations
  • Client experience, bookings and revenue growth at the centre
  • Full-time position based in Wellington

We are seeking an experienced, commercially minded leader to operationalise and grow the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra’s Te Ngākau Recording Studios business. The Director will build and manage the studio’s client pipeline, oversee bookings and delivery, and ensure every project is delivered to a high standard—commercially and creatively.

The NZSO is Aotearoa New Zealand’s national orchestra, an autonomous Crown entity recognised as an outstanding orchestra of international stature. Te Ngākau Recording Studios will grow the NZSO’s commercial recording activity across music, screen and games—bringing together world-class musicians, production capability and client service to support local and international projects.

Key responsibilities

  • Develop and deliver a multi-year growth plan to scale Te Ngākau Recording Studios into a sustainable commercial studio.
  • Win new business—spot opportunities, pitch proposals, and lead marketing with NZSO leadership.
  • Build both national and international relationships across music, screen and games; be the key contact from enquiry to delivery and rebookings.
  • Plan and deliver recording projects with NZSO players—scope, schedules, resourcing and session delivery.
  • Manage quotes, contracts, invoicing and debtors; track budgets and report performance against targets.
  • Own the bookings pipeline and studio calendar to maximise utilisation and grow non-Crown revenue.
  • Be “the face” of the studio representing the business at conference, events, etc.
  • Lead the team; set standards, assign work and assure quality.
  • Keep the studio safe and operational—equipment upkeep, preventative maintenance and Health & Safety compliance.

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate:

  • Proven experience in a professional recording studio environment, with a strong grasp of operations and delivery.
  • Strong commercial capability (sales, contracting and/or business development) with a track record of revenue growth.
  • High-confidence relationship management, ideally with networks across music, screen and games (Aotearoa and internationally).
  • Experience leading people and/or suppliers—setting clear expectations and delivering results.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and stakeholders at pace, with excellent organisation and follow-through.
  • Financial acumen, including budgeting, forecasting and performance reporting.
  • Excellent communication skills and a client-first approach.
  • Experience in orchestral and/or performing arts environments is advantageous.

What we offer

  • A unique opportunity to shape and grow a high-profile studio connected to the NZSO.
  • A collaborative environment with leading creative and technical professionals.
  • Work with local and international clients across music, screen and games.
