(apprendistato / accademico)
Position: Viola Cadet position
The KZN Philharmonic Orchestra is a full-time professional orchestra based in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Previous orchestral experience is essential. The salary package includes six weeks of paid leave, medical benefits, and settling-in assistance.
An orchestral Cadet position (formerly known as Fellowship position) is a student position aimed at helping promising musicians transition into full-time employment as professional musicians.
It includes significant playing opportunity in the orchestra as tutti player, as well as weekly lessons with a suitably qualified teacher. In addition to semesterly assessments, the candidate is encouraged to apply for vacant positions as and when they are confident to do so, and to pursue further formal studies and professional development.
Cadet positions are offered for no more than three years consecutively and are open to South African citizens or international candidates who have a South African general work visa.
The application process is two-fold. First, applicants must send a detailed CV, ID copy and video recording of one of the solo pieces listed in the audition requirements. This should be sent to auditions@kznphil.org.za.
The deadline for receipt of this material is 14 June 2026. Such recording may be uploaded to Youtube, Google Drive, Dropbox, or similar.
Selected candidates will then be invited to the second part of the application, which will be auditions (live or recorded), to be held in Durban on 24 June 2026. For the audition itself, candidates need to prepare all the material specified below.
Candidates that wish to do a recorded audition are advised to send the complete audition recordings by 14 June 2026, as per the recording instructions specified below.
