Love playing music? Curious about leading others? This could be for you.
We’re looking for a Trainee Music Director to join Jambone, a brilliant collective of young people aged 13 to18 who love improvising and exploring popular, jazz and jazz‑influenced music.
This role is for musicians who might not see themselves as leaders (yet!), but who love music, enjoy working with people, and want to inspire the next generation. If you’re keen to grow your leadership skills in a supportive, real‑world setting, we’d love to hear from you.
You’ll be part of weekly Sunday sessions (term time) and work closely with an experienced Music Director and a wider team of musicians and tutors from The Glasshouse Centre for Advanced Training.
Who is this for?
This role is ideal if you are:
· A musician first, curious about leadership and facilitation
· Into popular, jazz or jazz‑derived styles
· Excited by improvisation and learning by ear
· Interested in working with young people, even if you’ve never done it before
What you don’t need
· You don’t need formal teaching qualifications
· You don’t need years of experience leading groups
· You don’t need to have all the answers

This is a trainee role. You’ll be supported, mentored and encouraged every step of the way.

Just as in the competition, the musicians are encouraged to observe, respond, and ultimately vote for the conductors with whom they establish the strongest artistic and human connection, selecting their four preferred participants, who will conduct the final concert.

The masterclass focuses on works by Mozart, Respighi and Tchaikovsky. The conducting technique follows the principles of Sergiu Celibidache, and the course includes Barform analysis—an approach based on the work of Alfred Lorenz and further developed by Romanian conductor Constantin Bugeanu.

Today, conductors and students from Europe, North and South America, Asia, and Oceania join participants from Japan—drawn not by advertising, but by what they discover when they search.
What they discover is a nine-day intensive course with the Symphonische Akademie, a full professional orchestra that responds immediately and precisely to every gesture. When an orchestra plays exactly what you conduct, you learn things no student ensemble can teach. You quickly discover what you truly know.
The 2027 program includes works by Haydn, Stravinsky, Wagner, R. Strauss, and Bruckner’s Symphony No. 8. Participants may choose between ensemble sessions, full-orchestra sessions, or the complete nine-day course.
The course is led by Naoki Sugiyama, a student of Herbert Kegel and Kurt Redel, two distinguished figures of the German conducting tradition. Iesson is offered in Japanese, English and German.

International Winter Academy 2027

Winter Academy 2027: International Masterclass for Conductors, Soloists, and Orchestral Musicians

The Japanese-German Philharmonic Society proudly announces the Winter Academy 2027, held in Saitama, Japan. This intensive 9-day international masterclass is uniquely designed for conductors, soloists, and orchestral musicians who seek to elevate their artistry through rigorous practical training and deep stylistic insight.

Under the artistic leadership of Director Naoki Sugiyama and a distinguished international faculty, the academy focuses on the core principles of the traditional German School of conducting and performance. A central pillar of our curriculum is developing a profound understanding of historical performance practices and conducting rigorous structural analysis based on critical score editions.

MROCI is conceived for conductors who wish to develop not only their technical command, but also a deeper artistic, analytical and human understanding of the conductor’s role. Its pedagogical approach combines rigorous score study, practical conducting technique, rehearsal strategy, sound perception, communication skills and leadership, always with a clear orientation towards real professional practice. The Institute offers two main online study formats for the 2026/2027 season running from Sept to June : individual online lessons, designed as personalised mentorship for conductors who require specific artistic and technical guidance, and intensive small-group online classes, conceived as a dynamic working environment.

Maremma Musica 2026 - International Festival and Masterclasses

Maremma Musica 2026 Festival and Masterclass to be held in the region of Grosseto, Tuscany, from 3 - 18 September 2026.
