The varnish was damaged when I bought it, so the bass has had a new varnish and set up by George Martin including a new bridge and bottom nut. I have used this bass professionally as my second instrument, including at my job in the Hallé and freelancing with the BBC Phil, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, and Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. It is a smaller bass but doesn't make a small sound; great in a chamber or solo setting as the scale length is very manageable. Handkerchiefs were also stuffed into the bow case to prevent the bow from moving inside the case. Ms. Lipkins wrote a description of the bow as follows: The French style bass bow is a Sartory model. The pernambuco stick is octagonal in shape, of a light brown color and is stamped, "S. LIPKINS N.Y." The ebony frog is mounted in sterling silver, with Parisian eyes. The button is solid, of sterling silver with ebony core. With mastodon tip and silver winding, this bow weighs 142.6 grams. The red arrow in the picture shows the location of the brand stamp "S. The previous owner had a new, thicker ebony fingerboard and bridge fitted with professional adjusters in 2006 by the late great London luthier Roger Dawson which replaced the cheaper fingerboard and bridge that were on before.This considerably improved the power, sustain and playability of the bass which makes it a lot better than this type of laminated bass. It is very easy to play and has a very big sound. It's strung with Thomastik Spirocore which still have a lot of life and growl in them.
