The Tudor Rose decoration on this bow is particularly notable and reflects Wilson’s connection with the British Hill tradition and his mentor Arthur Bultitude. Before Wilson adopted his later signature double-concentric-hoop (Parisian eye) design, he produced a small number of bows featuring Tudor Rose decoration in the frog. It has been suggested that examples such as this may represent an interesting period in the development of Wilson’s individual style, bridging his Hill training with his later independent work. The cello has a warm, resonant and projecting sound and is currently playable. It has a nice depth of tone and responds well across the instrument. The instrument has clearly had a long playing life and shows age-related wear, scratches, scuffs and worn edges, consistent with its age. There are also some repaired cracks, including a split to the back and further splits to the front and ribs, as noted in the original auction-house condition report. The cello is unlabelled internally. The Mittenwald attribution is based on the description provided by the auction house at the time of purchase. The interior retains the original Schuster & Co. label dated 1919 and a later handwritten label referring to the 1985 correction by T. Melka. The cello features beautifully figured maple on the back and ribs and an attractive warm amber-brown varnish. Its provenance has been verified directly at source.
