Augusta Di Leonardo trained at the Antonio Stradivari violin-making school in Cremona.

The instrument is her personal model “Il Marchese”. A particularly interesting feature is the antique scroll/head from an unidentified older violin, which was intentionally incorporated into the instrument and is explicitly documented by Augusta Di Leonardo in the certificate.

The violin is in very good condition and has a warm, rounded and rather dark tonal character, with a substantial lower and middle register and an easy, pleasant response.

An exceptional early example by the distinguished Icelandic maker Hans Johannsson, offering a rare opportunity to acquire an instrument from the formative period of a career that would later earn international recognition.

Having graduated with distinction from the Newark School of Violin Making in 1980, Johannsson established workshops in both Iceland and Luxembourg shortly thereafter. This violin was commissioned at his workshop in the picturesque 12th century castle Château de Bourglinster in Luxembourg. The commission marked the beginning of a warm and enduring friendship between maker and owner, adding a charming personal dimension to the instrument’s history. Musically, the violin is every bit as compelling as its provenance suggests. Beautifully balanced throughout its range, it produces a rich, warm and velvety tone effortlessly.

Concertmaster

Date: Saturday, September 19, 2026Time: 9am-5pmLocation: St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church, 1402 W Main St, Carmel IN 46032Rate: $210/service, approximately 32 services (based on 26-27 season)Application Deadline: Friday, August 21, 2026 at 11:59pm How to Apply:1.) Beautiful 1928 Salsedo violin with a rich, warm tone and excellent projection. I bought this instrument while studying at conservatoire, where it proved to be a reliable and inspiring companion. It is ideal for an advanced student, conservatoire musician, or someone beginning their professional career.

The violin is in good overall condition for its age and has had high-quality work throughout its life.

A wonderful antique violin with real character that deserves to be played. Viewing and trial are welcome. Please get in touch for further information, photographs, or recordings.
