Just as in the competition, the musicians are encouraged to observe, respond, and ultimately vote for the conductors with whom they establish the strongest artistic and human connection, selecting their four preferred participants, who will conduct the final concert.

The masterclass focuses on works by Mozart, Respighi and Tchaikovsky. The conducting technique follows the principles of Sergiu Celibidache, and the course includes Barform analysis—an approach based on the work of Alfred Lorenz and further developed by Romanian conductor Constantin Bugeanu.

Today, conductors and students from Europe, North and South America, Asia, and Oceania join participants from Japan—drawn not by advertising, but by what they discover when they search.
What they discover is a nine-day intensive course with the Symphonische Akademie, a full professional orchestra that responds immediately and precisely to every gesture. When an orchestra plays exactly what you conduct, you learn things no student ensemble can teach. You quickly discover what you truly know.
The 2027 program includes works by Haydn, Stravinsky, Wagner, R. Strauss, and Bruckner’s Symphony No. 8. Participants may choose between ensemble sessions, full-orchestra sessions, or the complete nine-day course.
The course is led by Naoki Sugiyama, a student of Herbert Kegel and Kurt Redel, two distinguished figures of the German conducting tradition. This course is aimed at those working in music education, or training to do so, and is also suitable for those looking for a solid technical grounding who may not yet have sufficient experience for Masterclasses 1-4. There are three workshops in October, February, and May, giving the opportunity for structured growth. We begin with Derbyshire County Wind Band, one of the leading youth wind bands in the UK. In February we explore specifics of working with strings, winds, and brass with small ensembles of RNCM students. The May workshop is with orchestras and ensembles from Junior RNCM. Use is made of our ConductIT online resource and video review of the participants conducting activity takes place during the course.
