The origins of classical orchestras in Shumen date back to the mid-19th century. Between 1848 and 1849, a group of Hungarian immigrants settled in the city. In 1850, under the leadership of Mihai Shafran, the first orchestra was established. A year later, with the support of merchant Anastas Hadji Stoyanov, Shafran formed a new ensemble that included twelve local youths. This orchestra remained active until 1860, when Shafran left Shumen.

Today, the Shumen State Philharmonic Orchestra presents a rich and diverse repertoire across various genres and styles. The orchestra has toured extensively, performing in countries such as Germany, Austria, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Monaco, Belarus, Greece, and South Korea.
