Jyväskylä Sinfonia is the jewel of classical music in Central Finland. Its heart beats in Jyväskylä and its sound resonates throughout the region. The orchestra’s more than 150 events each year reach around 40,000 listeners, ranging from symphonic concerts to genre-crossing special productions and music events for audiences of all ages. In autumn 2024, the Italian conductor Lorenzo Passerini began his tenure as Chief Conductor of the orchestra.

Jyväskylä Sinfonia was founded in 1955 and was first municipalized in 1965. Its history includes several phases during which it has operated not only as a municipal organization but also, at times, as a private company. Today, the orchestra employs 39 musicians.

In 2024, a new chapter began in the orchestra’s history when it moved into new premises at the Paviljonki and its renovated Encore Hall. At the same time, planning continues for a dedicated concert hall as part of the City of Jyväskylä’s cultural development plan. Jyväskylä Sinfonia performs actively throughout its home region and appears at festivals across Finland during the summer. The orchestra also works in close collaboration with Jyväskylä Opera, most recently in a production of Gaetano Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor.

Jyväskylä Sinfonia has made numerous recordings with various record labels. The latest album, Naava, was released in autumn 2025 and features works by Ville Matvejeff and Joel Järventausta. Other recordings include Pekka Kostiainen’s Easter oratorio Triduum Paschale and Requiem, albums recorded with baritone Waltteri Torikka, Aulis Sallinen’s 80th anniversary album with Meta4, and a full album of music by Olli Virtaperko.

Audience engagement and active outreach are an essential part of Jyväskylä Sinfonia’s activities. The now traditional Sinfonia on the Move weeks in spring and autumn bring the orchestra’s musicians into everyday urban life, as small ensembles perform in a wide variety of locations, from service homes to shopping centres. Annual school concerts for sixth-graders and participants in the nationwide Taidetestaajat programme introduce students to the work of a symphony orchestra and to art music.
