Orchestration (Online) | Juilliard Extension
29 Jan - 30 Apr, 2025
Orchestration is an essential course that teaches composers the skills of writing for orchestral instruments. There are weekly interactive activities that include live demonstrations, composition readings, and question-and-answer sessions with guest instrumentalists. Students compose for every instrument in the orchestra across both semesters. During the fall semester, the class explores strings, harp, and percussion. During the spring semester, the class explores winds and brass. Each semester culminates in a mixed-ensemble reading of original transcriptions. The final projects are read and recorded by students of the Juilliard College Division.
This is a yearlong course. Students may join in either fall or spring; however, spring placements are contingent on midyear vacancies. Prerequisite: familiarity with music notation software, such as Finale or Sibelius.
