A rare opportunity exists for an accomplished and versatile keyboardist/pianist to join the Band of the South Australia Police in a full-time permanent position.

Working alongside a team of professional musicians, the successful applicant will perform across a wide range of settings including concerts, ceremonial engagements, corporate functions and community events throughout South Australia. Successful applicants are appointed as a Probationary Constable and, subject to satisfactory completion of probation, are eligible for permanent appointment as a Constable after 12 months.

About the Role

Established in 1884, the Band of the South Australia Police is one of South Australia's leading professional performing ensembles. This role combines high-level musicianship with community engagement and support of South Australia Police through music.

We are seeking an outstanding pianist with strong improvisation skills, the ability to perform from chord charts and scores, and experience accompanying vocalists. Applicants should be comfortable performing across a broad range of styles including jazz, swing, musical theatre, Latin, funk, soul, rock, pop and contemporary music. Strong jazz and big band experience will be highly regarded.

The successful applicant will be a core member of the Band's rhythm section, performing with the 20-piece Big Band, Concert Band and various contemporary and commercial ensembles, often working closely with the Band's vocalist.

Professionalism, adaptability and strong ensemble skills are essential, including the ability to follow a conductor and collaborate effectively with other musicians. Experience with professional ensembles, theatre orchestras, commercial bands, synthesisers and electronic keyboards will be highly regarded.

All members also perform with the Parade Band. An existing ability to double on a marching band instrument is highly desirable, but willingness to develop is essential. Training in ceremonial drill and marching procedures will be provided. Members are expected to maintain high standards of presentation, discipline and professionalism.

The role involves evening and weekend work, regular regional travel, and occasional interstate or overseas travel. Travel and meal allowances apply. A reasonable level of physical fitness and adaptability is required.

Audition Process

Applicants must submit a 5-10 minute recording demonstrating versatility across at least three contrasting works or excerpts, along with any relevant sheet music. Inclusion of an improvised performance is encouraged.

Shortlisted candidates will attend a live audition, with emphasis on improvisation and vocal accompaniment, followed by two mock rehearsals: one with a small ensemble and one accompanying a vocalist.

Auditions will be held on 19 and 20 October 2026 at the Band facility in Gepps Cross, South Australia.

Applicants must be Australian or New Zealand citizens, or hold Australian permanent residency. Band members are appointed as police officers but do not undertake operational policing duties. Probity, medical and psychological assessments form part of the recruitment process.
