Leader
(part-time, one-year)
The Leader works closely with the Artistic Director, the Section Leaders, and the Repertoire Group to fulfil the responsibilities of their role.
This role is also integral to ensuring the overall performance of the orchestra. The Leader will need to work collaboratively with the Artistic Director and Section Leaders to monitor and address performance of across the orchestra.
Responsibilities Include:
- Inspirationally lead the Orchestra for all concerts and rehearsals, taking responsibility for the violin solos.
- Prepare bowings, in collaboration with the other string section leaders, and make sure the string parts are marked up, ideally prior to the first rehearsal for each concert programme.
- To continue improving the quality of the first violin section, the Leader should have an ongoing awareness of the sound of their section, and how they respond to the Conductor. Prepare and distribute first violin seating lists for each session in consultation with the Artistic Director and their desk partner.
- The Leader should feel comfortable making technical recommendations not only for violin sections, but for the entire string section.
- Work in tandem with the Orchestra Artistic Director in the preparation and performance of the music.
- Make arrangements to provide a deputy, approved by the Orchestra Artistic Director, as a substitute when prevented by illness or any other unavoidable cause from leading concerts personally.
- The Artistic Director, Executive Committee Members, or Section Leaders may consult the Leader for advice on any aspect related to the Orchestra.
- Represent the upper strings as a member of the Repertoire Group to select pieces for each concert in a given season
- Experience in leading grade 8 symphony orchestras
- Ability to motivate and develop the Orchestra
- Extensive knowledge of classical music genres, styles, and composers
